BOB: Building on Bitcoin with Layer-2 Innovations

BOB, or Build on Bitcoin, is a Layer-2 (L2) protocol that enhances Bitcoinโ€™s scalability by leveraging the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This compatibility allows developers to create sophisticated Solidity smart contracts to power decentralized applications (dApps) on Bitcoin.

In addition to EVM compatibility, BOB uses the OP Stack, a versatile framework developed by Optimismโ€”Ethereumโ€™s L2 scaling solution. The OP Stack simplifies the process of building rollups and blockchains, making it easier for developers to innovate.

BOB is a platform for experimentation across various sectors, including rollups, artificial intelligence (AI), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and entertainment. Its goal is to expand Bitcoinโ€™s use cases and attract a broader user base while upholding Bitcoinโ€™s core values, such as immutability, security, scarcity, decentralization, and portability.

BOB also ensures that projects developed on its platform are deployable on other chains and rollups. The protocol aims to facilitate seamless interaction between Bitcoin and Ethereum, combining Ethereumโ€™s innovation with Bitcoinโ€™s robust security.

Trustless Bridges and Unified Asset Management

To achieve interoperability between Bitcoin and Ethereum, BOB is developing trustless bridges. These bridges will facilitate interactions between the two Layer-1 (L1) blockchains and support unified asset management for both EVM assets and BTC. This will enable EVM contracts on BOB to access Bitcoin transaction data necessary for peer-to-peer swaps, such as selling a Bitcoin inscription for USDC on BOB.

Merged Mining for Enhanced Security

BOB plans to inherit Bitcoinโ€™s security through merged mining, a process that allows Bitcoin miners to secure the Layer-2 protocol using the same hardware they use for Bitcoin mining. This method enables BOB to leverage Bitcoinโ€™s hashing power to enhance its security. Merged mining will be introduced in the second phase of BOBโ€™s development.

Optimistic Rollups and Future Upgrades

Initially, BOB will operate with an Optimistic rollup layer built on the OP Stack but will transition to zero-knowledge (ZK) validation in the future. Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid unless proven otherwise with fraud proofs, while ZK rollups use validity proofs to confirm transactions, providing more efficient and secure settlement on the blockchain.

Although BOB is built on Bitcoin, the OP Stack rollup initially settles on Ethereum. Eventually, BOB will incorporate merged mining, allowing Bitcoin miners to validate the rollup layer, further enhancing security.

By adopting the OP Stack, BOB allows users to access Ethereum assets and liquidity. The rollup layer also integrates the Risc Zero zkVM, enhancing transaction privacy and efficiency. This rollup layer will feature account abstraction, allowing users to on-ramp from Bitcoin and use BTC to pay transaction fees. BOB plans to transition into a rollup directly on Bitcoin once BitVM is operational.

Bitcoin Bridges and Expanded Functionality

BOB will support multiple Bitcoin bridges to facilitate Bitcoin-Ethereum interactions and unified asset management, allowing seamless transfers of ETH and other assets between Ethereum and BOB. One type of bridge will enable EVM smart contracts to access the transactional and block data needed for BTC transactions, such as peer-to-peer swaps. This feature allows users to trade Ethereum assets or BTC-backed tokens.

Additionally, BOB will have an Ethereum L1/L2 bridge for accessing wrapped BTC versions like wBTC and tBTC v2. Later, the network will introduce a BTC bridge powered by BitVM, enabling complex and expressive Bitcoin smart contracts.

Developer-Friendly and EVM-Compatible

BOBโ€™s EVM compatibility enables developers to build Bitcoin-secured dApps using Solidity, promoting innovation on the Bitcoin network. This compatibility also means that BOB supports existing Ethereum wallets, block explorers, data analytics platforms, and developer tools such as Remix and Hardhat, making it a versatile environment for developing Bitcoin-based solutions.
