Linera is a Level 1 blockchain dedicated to providing secure, high scalability, and low latency infrastructure to enhance the responsiveness of Web3 applications, bridging the performance gap between centralized and decentralized applications. The founding team comes from Meta (Facebook) and has deeply participated in the development of the Diem blockchain, showcasing solid technical strength. However, compared to Sui and Aptos, Linera’s technical team is relatively smaller and less experienced. In June 2022, the project raised $6 million in seed round funding from well-known investment institutions including A16Z.

Technical Features of Linera

Multi-Chain Architecture (Microchains/Integrated Multi-Chain)
Linera adopts a parallel multi-chain model to process transactions, thereby enhancing throughput and block speed. Compared to existing mainstream scaling solutions, its design claims the following advantages:
- Faster than single-chain architecture
- Easier cross-chain interaction than sharding technology
- Resolves disputes faster than Rollup solutions
Elastic Validator Mechanism
Linera delegates different microchains to different Workers for processing, allowing the system to horizontally scale according to load changes. As transaction volumes increase, validators can dynamically increase the number of Workers to optimize performance and stability.
Smart Contract Language
Linera develops smart contracts using Rust language while also drawing on the resource-based Move language, enhancing security and composability. Since Move is based on Rust syntax, Linera’s so-called “drawing on” can be seen as a partial extension or variant of Move language.
Consensus Mechanism (DPoS + BFT)
Linera combines DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake) and BFT (Byzantine Fault Tolerance) consensus mechanisms, where DPoS determines the voting weight of validators, while BFT is responsible for final block decisions.
- Due to its multi-chain architecture and BFT consensus, Linera can achieve a “one-click chain launch” feature, supporting rapid deployment of new chains.
- Its elastic validator mechanism enables good dynamic scaling capabilities, improving overall responsiveness.
- However, Linera still has shortcomings in cross-chain solutions, and due to its architectural characteristics, has a relatively high level of centralization.
